HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN DOING WHAT YOU DO, AND HOW DID YOU BECOME A MINDSET COACH FOR HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS?

My story:

To answer this question, it’s probably best that I share with you a defining moment, and a resulting compelling story, that brought me to where I am today – coaching health care professionals like you on exactly what to do to rediscover your passion, enjoy your life again, have more fun, and make more money. That defining moment in my life happened in 2014.

A few months prior, I was working as a weekend emergency and on-call vet, sometimes working as much as 72 hours straight. My husband worked overnights, and I juggled overnight babysitters for our first child. In addition to working all day long, I was on-call at night and would often barely hit the pillow before the phone would go off again. I was exhausted, I barely saw my husband, and I was missing out on my son’s childhood.

After more than three years of that schedule, my body and mind couldn’t take it anymore. We moved to my hometown state of Utah for what sounded like a great opportunity – a small practice in a great location with no on-call. I was excited to have a better quality of life.

Unfortunately, it turned out to be a toxic environment that made me dread going to work every day. By this time, we had two small children. I’d taken a pay cut out of desperation for a better quality of life – and now we could just barely make ends meet. This time, the stress took a toll on my body – I broke out in hives three months into the job, and they stayed for a year and a half! I was depressed, I was sick, and there were times when I debated whether it was worth continuing. The perfect job turned into a nightmare.

I knew I needed to make a change. Several months into that job, I decided I needed to be the boss so that I could set my own hours and make more money. I started to look for my own practice. Fourteen months after moving to Utah, I bought my own practice – in rural Montana (30 minutes outside of our favorite city).

By this time, I had started to learn some of the frightening statistics among veterinarians. I started hearing the percentages of depression and the rate of suicide in the field. I was determined those wouldn’t happen to me. And now that I was in charge, I felt pretty confident I would be one of the lucky ones and escape that devastating fate.

We loved Montana! The suicidal thoughts that ran through my mind while I was in the old job faded away. I loved my kids and family too much to take those steps. What I didn’t love was that I’d moved into a small town of 2,000 people. The clinic was great, but I learned that I really didn’t like small town living (the distance from our favorite city felt much further than I had thought it would).

About six months into owning my own business, I felt trapped. Again. It was a rude awakening to discover that I’d traded bad jobs where I felt trapped for a business where I was equally (if not more) trapped! I couldn’t even take a day off. The suicidal thoughts returned.  I knew nothing about running a business and almost bankrupted my family in the first year.

I just kept saying to myself: “How did my life end up like this?!”

I had wanted to be a veterinarian since I was 8 years old! How did I end up in my early thirties, trapped in a business that I was starting to hate, in a field I was starting to resent, up to my eyeballs in student debt and watching my marriage go downhill? This is what I’d spent years training to do, and if I didn’t like working for someone else OR working for myself, how would I ever escape?

I made a decision right then and there that I was going to figure out this whole “happiness” thing, even if it killed me! At that very moment, I made a commitment to immerse myself in absolutely everything that had to do with happiness: I learned how to set goals, I learned to be open to new opportunities, and I learned to be happier where I was WHILE I was working on achieving my goals. A year later, I outsourced myself from my business and moved to the town of our dreams (back in Utah!).

Talk about a turnaround!

I started working as a relief vet when I wasn’t in Montana checking on my own clinic. I had freedom, I had flexibility. I could take as many shifts as I wanted, and I could take a vacation whenever I felt like it.

But there was still one problem. I was still stuck working in clinics to pay the bills. And on top of that, I knew that my real goal was helping other veterinarians. I wanted to help other women who felt frustrated with their lives or with the field, and I wanted to help them build the lives they wanted to live.

So, I created my coaching business. I cleaned up my past and started teaching women veterinarians how they can do the same. I watched the life come back into their eyes and bodies as they found the passion they had lost along the way. I have since made a commitment to dedicate the rest of my professional life to helping other veterinarians (or other women who feel trapped working in their fields) turn their lives and careers around, regain their passion, have more fun, and make more money so that they can build the life they want to live.

Since then, I’ve worked with many women and spoken in front of many groups. I am living my dream of traveling with my family and serving amazingly talented women veterinarians. And I have created  “The Happy Practitioner: 90 days to more money, fun, and freedom!” This is a series of seven important inner and outer business and life-building steps that every woman veterinarian needs to live life again on her own terms, while having more fun and making more money!

WHO ARE YOUR CLIENTS?

I work with women veterinarians and other health care practitioners just like you (dentists, medical doctors, chiropractors, etc), who are really good at their jobs but a little closer to burnout than they’d like. Women who are ready to make changes to their lives, to create the lives they thought they’d be living!

WHAT MAKES YOU DIFFERENT FROM OTHERS TRYING TO MAKE THE HEALTH CARE FIELDS A HAPPIER PLACE?

When working with me, we will occasionally talk about practical steps such as time management and other practical mindset practices (meditation, gratitude, etc.) However, while working together, you have me as a confidence and action consultant (I am an expert at seeing outside of the box, finding solutions that are hiding in the shadows). I work on the inner and outer principles for success and look at your career and your lifestyle from an outside perspective.

What that means is you get input from someone who has been there, done that, and who is great at finding solutions that are perfect but that may not have seemed obvious at first. You also get someone to keep you accountable, to help you take the steps that are necessary to creating your dream life.

I’m concerned with helping you enjoy your life more, creating the mindset shifts necessary to get you focused on taking action to move towards your goals more quickly! I spent years trying to find the solutions and now you don’t have to. You may not always like what I tell you, but you can be sure I’ll always tell you the truth about what’s standing in your way and how to make changes so you can start getting results quickly! (I also try to bring a lot of humor and inspiration to the conversations!)

WHAT TYPE OF PERSONALITY DO YOU WORK BEST WITH, AND WHAT IS EXPECTED OF ME?

The Happy Practitioner workshops, products, and programs were created for women who are absolutely excited and dead serious about breaking out of their rut, refinding their passion, making more money, and living their lives with more freedom and fun! They were created for you to put systems in place within a few months (sometimes weeks!) that will eventually lead you to having more fun, being more excited about your goals, and having more confidence that you’ll be able to achieve them.

That’s what I call FREEDOM.

Being a high-achieving go-getter myself, I’m known to work best with other high achieving go-getters (which most health care professionals are) – women who are committed to their success and goals, no matter what. I work with women who are completely ready to get going and just want to know what steps to take to get where they want to go. My clients often tell me, “Wow, I hadn’t thought of that option, now how do I do it?”

Consider the program to be a crash course in changing mindsets, creating goals, and developing the steps and habits to create your dream life. You will be expected to take serious and consistent action. This is for people who are tired of excuses and ready to make changes, who are open to a different way of thinking, and who want full support while they achieve this incredibly exciting goal: more money, more freedom, more fun, and the life of your dreams!

FOR WHAT TYPE OF PROFESSIONALS ARE YOUR PROGRAMS NOT GOING TO WORK?

Please know that I’m very selective in who I work with, choosing to (gently) turn away people who aren’t suited for my programs and won’t get the results for which they have signed up. It wouldn’t be fair to either of us to work together.

The Happy Practitioner programs are NOT for those who have no money coming in and who are absolutely financially desperate, at least not right away. They’re also not for people who are actively suicidal (please seek help from a licensed mental health professional first!). It’s been my experience that people in financial or emotional crisis do not trust the recommendations I give them and do not do the work (probably because they spend so much time worrying about other problems).

If you fall within that category, it’s okay. I’ve been there. Before joining my programs, please do yourself a couple of favors:

 

  • Do whatever you need to do to get stabilized, whether that’s therapy or a part-time job or something else. This will create a little more space and peace of mind for you. It will also declutter your mind enough to allow you to focus on your Happy Practitioner assignments and the big picture. Once you start seeing the improvements you’ve been wanting, then you’ll likely be able to reduce your other efforts and focus on your goals.
  • Sign up for the free Happy Practitioner emails. The free information will get you started towards your goals until you’re ready to work with me one-on-one.
  • Be protective of your energy. If you’re hanging out with people who only want to complain about their jobs and their finances (or whatever) rather than people who are ready to make changes and support you in yours, this will only drag you down. So make sure you’re hanging out with the right people (and this includes in Facebook groups, by the way).

 

Doing these things will really help you get primed for our work. When you’re ready, call me and we’ll get you started (I’m in no rush, I’ll be here when you need me).

 

Beyond that, I work with people who are self-motivated, ready to take action, who are done with excuses and open to new solutions and creative ideas that they may not have thought of or tried yet. If this is not you (if you’re happier complaining instead of making changes), then I respectfully ask that you not call, and I hope you understand why. We’ll probably not work well together, and I wouldn’t want you to waste your time or money. Is that fair?

You’ve heard the saying about putting on your own oxygen mask first. As healers, we are used to using all our energy and time to take care of others (patients, families, etc). It’s time to put ourselves first. We can’t help others if we’re drained, so putting ourselves first is actually very practical and allows us to help others even more! But because it’s not always something that comes naturally to us, we’ll talk about ways to incorporate it better into our lives.

 

4- CREATING BOUNDARIES

 

It is often very hard for us to say no or to establish boundaries. This applies to clients, bosses, families, and even ourselves! We create lists of things that we need to do, and get so overwhelmed by trying to do them when really, none of it matters anyway!

 

5- TRANSFORM

 

Now that we’ve figured out where we want to go and put some boundaries in place so we’re taking care of ourselves, it’s time to figure out what those next steps are to transform our lives and achieve our goals! Sometimes this is just an action plan, sometimes we actually have to close one door before we can open another!

 

6- AMP IT UP!

 

We’re on the right path, we’re excited, now it’s time to amp it up! Very often, this is as simple as actually being open to seeing and receiving the opportunities that are available to us!

 

7- CELEBRATE!

 

Celebrate your wins! It’s so easy to get pulled down by the business of life, but what you focus on is where your energy goes! So make sure to take the time to celebrate all the wins, little or big!

HOW QUICKLY CAN I EXPECT RESULTS?

Others have a bit more work to do. It also depends on how drastic the changes you’re wanting to make are – whether you’re wanting more enjoyment from where you already are, or whether you want to completely change your life around!

Do all of your homework. Be totally committed to your success. Understand that this is a process, a proven one, that works if you take action and implement all of the steps.
